How to - Instagram Highlight Covers

I have seen this in so many Boss Babe groups and have gotten dm's about how to create instagram highlights so I thought I would share some tips and tricks! I do see some designers offering the creation of these highlights as a paid service but if you don't have the funds to be able to do that, I want you to know you can still create some killer covers and customize them as much as you want! So let's jump in

What are highlights

Highlights are Instagram stories that you want to make available for future viewing - they are kept at the top of your instagram and can be grouped together into Highlight Cover categories. You may see on bloggers, business, and influencer profiles, that these highlight groups have highlight covers that have a similar look to them. I personally make each of mine on photoshop and have the title of each highlight group as an overlay on the images. I have them separated into Creative Work, Collaborations, Food!, Fashion & Beauty, and Adventures. Before creating your covers, think about what you would normally post on your story and make a list of potential cover ideas.

Understanding sizing

Highlight covers are the same size as Instagram stories (9 by 16). Most apps give this option for cropping which is very useful if you want to create a cover out of something you already have made on your phone. When brainstorming you cover there are two components you have to think about: the cover image as whole (the entire image will pop up as your first image in your highlight group), as well as the circle preview that will stay static on the top of your profile. As seen in the image on the right, the white circle is what will be seen from your profile before someone clicks your highlight.

What kind of covers?

First, let’s make a list of the covers you are going to want to design! Are you a lifestyle blogger who would want a highlight for food, OOTD posts, travel and beauty? Do you want a cover for each of trips you’ve been on? Maybe you a brand who wants one highlight group for testimonials, one for prices, and one for promotions! Think about what you would typically post on a story and what kinds of categories you could group them in to, and use that as a jumping off point for your categories! Mine for example cover the various areas I dabble in on the ol’ gram including creative collaborations, beauty and fashion, creative work, adventures and FOODS!

Creating Covers using canva

Canva is a very simple tool anyone can use to create their own custom highlight covers especially if you are not used to using Photoshop or other design software.  All you have to do is log on or create an account, click create a design, then click “use custom dimensions”. Make your width 1080 px and your height 1920 px. You are now free to start adding backgrounds, fonts, or icons to symbolize your highlight cover! As noted above, make sure you but the icon in the centre of the highlight cover image so that it shows up in the little circle on your instagram page!

Creating covers using photoshop

If you are a photoshop kind of entrepreneur then you'll love how east it is to fully customize your own highlight covers! Create a new document with the same specs (1080 x 1920), and now you have full creative freedom to design and bring in any elements of your choosing whether that be your own photos, text, or hand drawn designs, or a combination of all of the above! I’ve also attached a little reference guide that you can download and pop into your photoshop document to ensure your icon is centered and taking up the appropriate amount of space!
